“Our goal is to help technicians understand how the entire rotating electrical system works and develop the capabilities to service it,” says Clint Stohler, Director of Technical Service and Training. “These competitions and training events are an important gateway to building awareness and repeatability in the technician’s standard work.”
These training events allow technicians to demonstrate their skill set and, more importantly, challenge themselves to take their skills to the next level. It’s a win for the companies and fleets they represent as well. By successfully navigating and diagnosing the electrical system, they are ensuring the long life of the starter and alternator.
How Competitions Work
At state and fleet national tech competitions, such as the Indiana Motor Trucking Association competition in June, Remy sponsors an electrical circuit challenge test. Designed with bugs in the system, the test—conducted either on a vehicle or simulation board—requires participants to troubleshoot, conduct diagnostics and resolve the issues.
The participants are judged on technical training qualifications, performance and workmanship as they maneuver through a series of technical challenges.
“We evaluate their success on both the sequence of steps and the speed with which they execute those steps,” Stohler explains. “These competitions feature the best of the best in their field, so it’s always impressive to watch these highly motivated and talented technicians.”
